Dear Friend of Blue Bear,

I just spent an enlightening day listening to young guitarists, drummers and vocalists audition for Blue Bear's first season of our middle school All Star Rock Band Program. It was truly awe-inspiring to watch these kids interact with Blue Bear's seasoned teachers and staff. Every kid came away with a smile and more than a little new knowledge of what it takes to rock in a band.

At Blue Bear, we're in the business of teaching youth who dream of becoming musicians, and adults who have deferred their passion long enough.

This year has been different than any other in the recent past. Blue Bear, like the nonprofit arts sector in general, is facing a serious crossroads. Our ability to support scholarships, sliding scale payments and community programs has been threatened.

You are a part of this community. You've plugged into the programs at the Fort Mason hub or connected though our annual spring benefit concert or know the esteemed reputation the school holds among Bay Area musicians.

We need your help now!

Can you help us maintain programs to keep Blue Bear music instruction in the lives of 600 San Francisco low-income school kids playing in rock bands? Can you help a kid from the projects sing in our Summer Camps? Can you help us keep rocking for another 40 years?

Your gift of $100 underwrites eight private lessons for a deserving young student on sliding scale.

Your gift of $200 buys a student guitar; $2,000 buys a classroom of guitars.

Your gift of $500 pays for a full scholarship to a week-long intensive youth Summer Camp.

Your gift of $1,000 provides a traveling kit of instruments for an off-site Little Bears program.

Your gift of $5,000 allows us to extend our programs to an additional after-school site in an under-served neighborhood in 2012.

And, of course a gift of any size helps keep the lights on, the amps humming and the staff scheduling - and is greatly appreciated!
