Mavis Staples was named one of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll by VH1 and one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone. Her infectious enthusiasm and her trailblazing, powerful grit-and-honey vocals grown from gospel roots will make this an unforgettable evening.
How many musicians can claim to exist outside any scene or genre yet weave themselves into the fabric of soul, R&B, jazz, gospel, rock and blues? From the delta-inflected gospel sound she helped create in the 1950s, to the engaged protest of the civil rights era, and then, amazingly, on pop radio with a series of soul anthems, from “I’ll Take You There” to “Respect Yourself,” Mavis’ warm embrace of a voice has been a multi-decade constant, making her indelible mark on American music.
Matt Jaffe & The Distractions
Matt Jaffe is a 19-year-old singer/songwriter from the San Francisco Bay Area and a former Blue Bear student, with influences ranging from The Clash, Elvis Costello, and Talking Heads to Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Fela Kuti. He was ‘discovered’ playing solo at an open mic by ex-Talking Head Jerry Harrison, who has helped mentor and create Matt’s unique sound. In bringing the ambitions of the studio to rambunctious life onstage, Matt sought out the youthful rhythm section of Alex Coltharp and Sammie Fischer to round out the Distractions, winners of the 2014 San Francisco Hard Rock Café Battle of the Bands and the 2013 Marin County Battle of the Bands.
TH__, a Blue Bear after-school youth band
TH_ has been playing together for two years now. Each member brings their own influences. Drummer Jasper has a great feel for music with complex rhythms. Alex’s metal guitar sound pairs perfectly with Nate’s melodic rhythm guitar. Blake adds a solid booming bass to back it all up. Finally, Charlotte’s charisma and powerful voice top off this band’s diverse and energetic sound.
Changing Lives Through Music Education:
Blue Bear benefit concerts provides crucial funding for our school’s nonprofit mission and music education programs that enrich the lives of more than 800 Bay Area youth, including hundreds of kids from low-income families and underserved communities in the Tenderloin and Bayview Hunters Point. Proceeds support our Rock Band Ensemble, Group Guitar and Vocal Performance Ensemble programs at seven public school partner sites, our Digital Studio Program at Bayview Hunters Point YMCA, and youth scholarships and sliding scale tuition support for low-income students of all ages receiving high-quality music instruction at our Fort Mason Center campus.
Please join us for this exciting event and help Blue Bear School of Music continue our 43-year legacy of bringing innovative and affordable music education programs to anyone, regardless of financial means, who is motivated to sing, play or craft a song.
